Biography
Baker is recorded as a witness to deeds at Horsham between 1362 and 1391.1 In October 1383 he as a juror at the inquest post mortem on Beatrice, widow of Thomas, Lord Brewes. Baker was one of several Horsham men accused at the Sussex assizes early in 1387 of wrongfully evicting Richard atte Berne from his property in the town; but, not being a principal in the affair, he was acquitted. At East Grinstead in April 1392 he was sworn in as a recognitor with regard to another assize of novel disseisin concerning holdings in Horsham, only for him and his fellows to be committed to prison in custody of the sheriff, for having, after their withdrawal to reach a verdict, received fresh evidence from one of the parties to the suit. Each had to pay a fine of 3s.4d. to secure his release.2
