Biography

A member of a prominent local family, Henry was possibly a son of Roger Beeby and certainly a relative of Thomas Beeby, the former mayor who represented Leicester in the Parliaments of 1351, 1355, 1360 and 1361. Having established himself as a wool merchant, Henry acted in 1380 and 1388-9 as warden of the local Corpus Christi guild, and was chosen mayor three times. His final election to Parliament took place during his last tenure of this office. In the course of his career he had dealings with Sir Fulk Pembridge* of Tong, Shropshire, who in 1383 had assigned to him the revenues of Kempston (Bedfordshire) for two years, perhaps in order to settle a debt. After his death he was commemorated by an obit (in which his name was joined with that of John Church*), at St. Martin’s, Leicester.2
