Biography

We know little of Carswell save what can be gleaned from the will of his wife, as made in August 1423. After arranging for legacies to her daughter, Joan, and her grandson, she left her husband Robert a tenement in Wallingford on condition he fulfilled the terms of her testament. Robert himself was probably dead by 1431. It is possible that Eleanor Carswell was a local heiress, and Robert an outsider brought into the borough by marriage. He was perhaps related to John Carswell (d.1408), former coroner of Oxfordshire.1
