Biography

Clerk was assessed for the poll tax of 1379 as an inhabitant of Midhurst.

Suss. Arch. Colls. xx. 11. It is possible that he was the Thomas Clerk who before 1385 married Joan, da. and h. of John Read by his w. Pernel, da. and h. of Robert Gensing of Gensing, Suss. As wid. of Richard Ore Joan held dower lands at Guestling and elsewhere (VCH Suss. ix. 19; Suss. Feet of Fines (Suss. Rec. Soc. xxiii), 2551). But the name is too common to establish this with certainty.
