Biography

In September 1364 Elyot, described as ‘vintner of Rye’, obtained a royal licence to take cloth and coin to the value of £70 to buy wine at Bordeaux. He witnessed deeds at Rye between March 1367 and April 1390, and between 1373 and 1395 is recorded as owning land near the town at Hope and Udimore in Sussex and at Staple in Kent. In the meantime, in 1374 he had been made a royal commissioner to re-arrest John Glesham, who had broken the gaol at Rye after being detained for a debt owned to John Salerne I*.2

Elyot himself was outlawed in November 1393 for failing to appear in court to answer a suit for debt, but he died before January 1396 when his death was given as the reason for failure to attach him. His daughter Joan, who inherited his property, married William Ive of Tenterden.3
