Biography

One of the indictments made following the affray at Midhurst on 29 Dec. 1401 in which William Baggele* was killed, held that Walter, Richard and Thomas Lucas (most likely brothers) had been among the burgesses who, together with Baggele, had plotted the death of Sir John Bohun, the lord of the borough, and, having assembled some 70 confederates, had forcibly resisted Bohun’s order to keep the peace. The Lucases subsequently appeared in the King’s bench and after initially denying the charges, pleaded guilty to assaulting Sir John. They were made to pay a fine as amends.2

A deed of March 1422 mentions a tenement Thomas Lucas was then occupying, situated just off North Street, Midhurst.3
