Biography

Serle became a member of the guild merchant of Totnes before 1405, but he lived outside the walled area of the town and is not known to have ever held property inside the gates. In 1416 he was assessed to contribute only 6d. towards the parliamentary subsidies levied there. Apart from his service on a local jury in 1414 and as a warden of ‘Leechwell’ ten years later he is not recorded in occupation of any local office.
