Biography
In 1412-13 Yoklete’s chattels at Hythe were valued at £16. The maltolts he paid in that and the following year show that he not only dealt in livestock and corn, but also sold (in a shop partly run by his wife) sea coal, salt, cloth, paper and parchment, along with other miscellaneous merchandise which in 1413-14 was valued at £22. That year he also bought up the town’s surplus stock of boarding.3
In 1411 Yoklete acted as a feoffee of lands at Wingham and elsewhere which John Dyne I* of Hythe had acquired by marriage. As a jurat he was naturally active on the town’s business: in March 1412 he went to Dover for discussions with Hythe’s counsel about a suit brought against a fellow townsman by the abbot of St. Radegund’s, and three months later he was engaged in examining ships for their fitness to do Hythe’s share of the Cinque Ports’ service to the King. In December he attended the Brodhull.4
Yoklete died at an unknown date before February 1424. He was survived by his widow, Joan, and perhaps by a son—John Yoklete, who four years earlier had paid maltolts at Hythe.5
