Biography

Richard More, who was returned as the senior Member for Dorchester to the last Parliament of Henry VIII’s reign, may have been a relative of Francis More of Dorchester, who benefited under the will made in 1549 by the town’s high steward, Sir Thomas Trenchard. He was perhaps the Richard More of Sherborne, Dorset, who was assessed at £19 in goods in 1545; at the inquisition held at Sherborne in 1550 after the death of Trenchard the jury included a Richard More gentleman. Between 1547 and 1551 Richard More gentleman brought two actions in Chancery, one against Mary, widow of John Carew and the other against Thomas Phelips. The Member may, however, have been Richard More of Cullompton, Devon, who was born about 1514, the son of William More and his wife Dorothy. This Richard More settled in London: in the reign of Edward VI he declared that he did not live in Devon and in June 1553 he sold his manor of Aller Peverell with its lands in Cullompton.
