Mayor, Whitchurch by 1586.

Biography

Carey was described as mayor of Whitchurch when he signed parliamentary returns for the borough in 1586 and 1589. When in 1597 he was himself elected, he was again called mayor in the manuscript list of members for the Parliament. Perhaps, therefore, Carey’s position was little more than rent collector for the owners of the borough, the dean and chapter of Winchester. Carey died in 1601, when administration of his estate was granted to his nephew William.
