Biography

Dacre’s father was sheriff of Cumberland in 1565 and 1581-2, a border commissioner, and one of the few border squires described as ‘well affected’ in 1583. His estate was then valued at £300. When Henry Dacre succeeded to the manor and rectory of Lanercost, together with numerous houses and extensive lands in several neighbouring parishes, he was still a minor, and his wardship was sold to Sir Edward Norris for £110. At the time, Dacre was a student of the Inner Temple; he kept commons there at least until 28 July 1601, when he was barred from commons with several others until he found a pledge for his debts. He owed his sole return to Parliament to his maternal grandfather. On 25 Sept. 1600 he signed Lord Scrope’s petition against the Carletons (see CARLETON, Thomas). He died 7 Oct. 1623.
