Biography

East Grinstead’s MPs were usually either local men or associates of Sussex magnates, especially the Buckhursts. Frere, a minor Sussex gentleman, returned with Francis Alford, a relative of Buckhurst, probably owed his return to his local standing. Little is known about him. By virtue of his wife’s previous marriage he secured the advowson of the Sussex rectory of Chalvington and made a presentation there in 1592. This is the last reference found to him.
