Biography

It is known that Shaw was nominated at Melcombe Regis in 1558 by Sir John Rogers, and probable that the same thing happened in 1559. As the parliamentary return for that year describes Shaw as ‘yeoman’ it is unlikely that he would have been of sufficient status to come in through his own local standing at Wareham in 1563, despite the proximity of Langton Matravers to that borough, and despite his being by then described as ‘gentleman’. Furthermore, Shaw was subsidy collector for the hundred of Pimperne, where Rogers was bailiff. Shaw was licensed to leave the 1563 Parliament for his ‘affairs at the assizes’, 24 Feb. He may therefore have been a lawyer and so, possibly, the Richard Shaw ‘late of Staple Inn’, administration of whose goods was granted 10 Nov. 1591.
