Biography

Thynne’s grandfather was a younger son of the Longleat family. His father, who bought Inworth from John Denham and his mortgagees, sat for Saltash as a recruiter in the Long Parliament until Pride’s Purge, but took no part in public affairs under the Commonwealth. The identification of the Member for Hindon in 1681 cannot be positively proved, but, as the father was 75 years of age, hard of hearing, and chiefly interested in his art collection (the finest in the county), it seems likelier to be the son. Whichever it was, he was plainly returned as a country candidate on the interest of his cousin Thomas Thynne II and his neighbour, Sir Matthew Andrews; but he made no speeches and was named to no committees. The murder of his patron in the following year put an end to his political prospects, though Thomas Thynne I renewed his lease of Thame rectory. After prolonged litigation over his father’s will, he admitted that it had been procured by fraud. He was buried at Egham on 16 Mar. 1699. This branch of the Thynne family died out in the male line in 1717 without further parliamentary honours.
