b. 19 Apr. 1719, 2nd s. of Joseph Banks II by his 1st w. educ. Westminster 1730-3; M. Temple 1736. m. c.1741, Sarah, da. of William Bate of Derbys., 1s. 1da. suc. maternal gd.-fa. and assumed name of Hodgkinson, 1733, but relinquished it on death of his e. bro. Joseph 1740; fa. 1741.

Biography

Returned for Grampound on the Prince of Wales’s interest, Banks consistently voted with the Opposition. Having in 1745 contracted a fever which deprived him of the use of his lower limbs,1 he did not stand for Parliament again. The father of Sir Joseph Banks, the eminent botanist, he died in 1761 (buried 1 Oct.).
