Biography
Charles Ewer, a London grocer, came of a Hertfordshire family settled at the Lea since the time of Henry VIII.2 In March 1741 he was chosen alderman for Broad St. ward, standing as a city radical3 and anti-Walpole candidate, but his election was challenged and not confirmed till November following. Meanwhile he was returned to Parliament for Shaftesbury on the interest of his nephew, the 4th Earl of Shaftesbury. He died suddenly 20 June 1742.
