Biography

John Tempest’s great-grandfather and father had represented the county of Durham and his grandfather the city, for which he himself was returned unopposed as a Tory at a by-election in 1742. Voting twice against the Administration on the Hanoverians, he was re-elected after a contest in 1747. He died 12 May 1776.
