Biography

Buxton, whose family had acquired by marriage an imposing estate in Wiltshire, was returned for Bedwyn (as his father had been) on the Ailesbury interest. He continued to represent the borough unopposed until its disfranchisement in 1832. He voted with administration on the Duke of Clarence’s establishment, 15 Apr. 1818; paired with them for the Irish window tax, 21 Apr.; and in the following Parliament supported them against Tierney’s censure motion, 18 May, and on the foreign enlistment bill, 10 June 1819. No speech of his is reported during his first Parliaments, unless he was ‘Colonel Burton’ who on 16 Apr. 1818 spoke in the sense that Buxton had voted the day before. He died 13 Oct. 1842.
