Biography

Orde Powlett succeeded to his father’s peerage within months of his election for Yarmouth on the interest of Sir Henry Worsley Holmes, who expected to take a giant’s share of the Isle of Wight patronage on Lord Bolton’s death.2 He left no mark in the House, where he would have been expected to support the Portland ministry. He was, in any case, a shy, if not an eccentric, man.3 He died 13 July 1850.
