Biography

No man of this name is mentioned in the surviving records of Barnstaple. It is possible that the MP was William Lange of Axminster, a friend of Sir William Bonville I (d.1408), the wealthy and influential Devon landowner who sat in the Parliament in question as knight of the shire for Somerset. Lange served Sir William as a feoffee of all his estates in Devon, Somerset, Dorset and Wales from 1380 until his death, and is found acting on his behalf in several other property transactions.

Devon RO, Petre (Bonville) mss, TB 190, 197, 354, 485; CCR, 1405-9, p. 420; CPR, 1391-6, p. 54.
