Biography

Loveryk came from an old Sandwich family. His presumed father, Thomas, the MP of 1368, 1373 and 1377 (Oct.), was a vintner who imported wine from Gascony and Spain and also traded in salt and cloth. He himself was owner of a barge called La Christofre which, early in 1388, was placed under arrest in Sandwich by royal order. In February, however, after he had shown in a petition that he had a licence to sail at his own expense ‘and adventure his person for defence of the sea, to the King’s honour and advantage’, his vessel was released to further this praiseworthy purpose. Subsequently, in 1405, he was engaged in exporting corn.3

Loveryk held land in the east Kent hundreds of Ringslow and Wingham, which in 1402 were assessed for the purposes of obtaining exemption from taxation, at 5s. His death occurred within a few months of the dissolution of his only Parliament in December 1406. In March following one of the trustees of his property conveyed a tenement in St. Clement’s parish, Sandwich, to St. John’s hospital. He had been wealthy enough to bequeath to St. Mary’s church a silver gilt monstrance for holding the sacrament on Corpus Christi day.4
