Biography

John Plympton was settled at Wincanton in Somerset but he seems also to have been an occasional resident of Shaftesbury over the county border in Dorset. He was mustered at Shaftesbury as an archer in 1542 and witnessed a deed signed there in July 1550. He probably owed his return for Shaftesbury in 1554 to the lord of the borough, (Sir) William Herbert I, 1st Earl of Pembroke, from whom he leased a house in Stoke Trister, the parish adjoining Wincanton. The earl’s steward Robert Grove was also a tenant and officer there and Grove’s son William was to marry Cecily Plympton’s niece.4

No will or inquisition post mortem has been found, but Plympton was dead (perhaps a victim of the prevailing epidemic) before 21 Feb. 1558 when his widow and daughter, together with Nicholas Swanton (whom the widow was to marry), took out a new lease on the house in Stoke Trister.5
