Biography

Goring came from the junior branch of a prominent Sussex family that was closely connected with the Court. His father, who died in 1602, bequeathed him an annuity of £80 a year.7 It was presumably his elder brother George*, appointed lieutenant of the gentlemen pensioners in 1616, who secured Goring a place in the band. He was certainly a gentleman pensioner by the following year, when he accompanied James I to Scotland, where he was knighted.

Goring’s uncle, Sir Edward Denny*, had married the daughter of Thomas Cecil†, 1st earl of Exeter, and it may well have been this connection which secured him the nomination of the 2nd earl of Salisbury (William Cecil*) at St. Albans in 1626.8 He left no trace on the records of the second Caroline Parliament. It is possible that poor health discouraged him from seeking re-election in 1628 as he was buried at St. Martin-in-the-Fields on 24 April. Ten weeks later a petition he had preferred, in conjunction with Robert Tyrwhitt, another royal servant, for a licence to export 5,000 barrels of butter a year at the rent of £100 per annum, was granted. No will or administration has been found.9
