Biography

Lawton, whose father had represented Newcastle-under-Lyme almost continuously between 1689 and 1710, gave up a post in the excise at a salary of £170 p.a. to stand for it in 1734. Returned after a contest, he consistently voted with the Administration till his death on 7 June 1740, leaving an estate said to be worth £1,800 p.a.2
