Biography
Thomas Martin’s grandfather and great-grandfather had both been mayors of Evesham. Entering the firm of Smith and Stone, bankers, at the sign of ‘the Grasshopper’, in Lombard Street, before 1699, he became a partner in 1703 and sole partner in 1711. Three years later he took his brother James Martin into partnership. He retired about the time he entered Parliament as a Whig for Wilton in 1727.1 Voting with the Administration in all recorded divisions, he did not stand again. He died 21 Apr. 1765.
