Biography
Edward Montagu, an army officer, who had been taken prisoner at Brihuega in 1710, commanded his regiment at Sheriffmuir in 1715. Returned on his family’s interest at Northampton, he supported the Government, voting for the excise bill in 1733, contrary to the instruction of the Northampton corporation, with the result that he was defeated at the next general election.1 He died 2 Aug. 1738.
