About this picture

by William Salter, Oil on Canvas, c. 1834-40, National Portrait Gallery, London, NPG 3757.

About the subject

A veteran of Waterloo, General Byng was appointed head of the Irish forces by the duke of Wellington in May 1828. His strategic cooperation with the Whigs in 1830 helped to get him elected as a reformer the following year, and as their most senior military supporter in the Commons thereafter, he was able to secure a peerage in 1835.
