About the subject
MP for Grampound 1621, Wendover 1624, 1625, 1626, 1628, Buckinghamshire 1640-3. John Hampden was one of the masterminds behind the attacks on the government of Charles I in the Long Parliament. The man who brought ship money to court in 1638, he was adept at political management; his death in battle in 1643 was regarded as a great loss for the parliamentarians.
