About the subject

MP for East Looe 1604, Saltash 1614, Bath 1621, Somerset 1624, 1625, 1628 HP Commons, 1604-29. Adept speaker Sir Robert Phelips was at the very head of the attacks on all of the policies of the government of James I in the 1621 Parliament. After the failure of an attempt in 1624 to work with the king’s favourite the duke of Buckingham, he led the assault on him in 1625, though after an enforced absence from the 1626-7 Parliament he was eclipsed by other Members, especially John Pym.
