About the subject

Strickland, a close ally of Oliver Cromwell, established his diplomatic reputation as the permanent envoy of Parliament to the Dutch government in the Hague – where his assistant, Isaac Dorislaus, was assassinated by royalists in 1649. After the Restoration he retired to Yorkshire and wrote a History of Persecution in defence of Protestant sects.
