ANSON, George (1797-1857), of Shugborough, near Lichfield, Staffordshire; 32 Curzon Street, Westminster, Middlesex

A handsome soldier and MP for South Staffordshire 1837-53, Anson’s ‘perfect manner’ and ‘irresistible personal address’ made him an attractive politician. His charm and emollience was put to good use as storekeeper and clerk of ordnance in the Whig governments of 1835-41, 1846-52, when he had to placate Radical MPs pressing for defence cuts.
