A ‘parvenu baronet’, Goodricke was a country banker who inherited a Yorkshire estate from a gambling companion. He briefly represented Stafford before winning a famous victory for the Conservatives at the 1835 South Staffordshire by-election. He retired two years later after local supporters described him as ‘a most inefficient member’.
