‘A specimen of the staunch old Tory school’, Gordon represented Aberdeenshire for three and a half decades. He parted company with his Peelite brother Lord Aberdeen over the repeal of the corn laws in 1846, resigning as a lord of the admiralty in Peel’s government. He sat until appointed commander-in-chief at Nore in 1854.
