THORNELY, Thomas (1781-1862), of Mount Street, Liverpool, Lancashire

Published in

A Liverpool Unitarian merchant, Thornely represented Wolverhampton from 1835 until 1859. A ‘worker rather than a talker’, Thornely was a good committee man, assiduous attender and reliable Liberal supporter. He was a prominent opponent of the corn laws, and lobbied American merchants and politicians, including the President, on the benefits of free trade during one visit.
