A non-practising barrister with an ‘infernal temper’, Treherne was finally returned as Conservative MP for Coventry in 1863, at the seven attempt, which was possibly a record in the annals of Victorian elections. Until his death he attacked the 1860 Anglo-French commercial treaty for admitting cheap French silks and ruining the staple ribbon trade of his constituency.
