Biography

Nicholas served as a juror at the borough court of Arundel in October 1387, a year before his election to the Cambridge Parliament. He leased, for an annual rent of 6s.8d., a plot of land in the ‘Portfeld’ at Arundel; but his tenure ended before 1399, by which date he may have died.

Arundel Castle mss A338, M9. In February 1407, at the proof of age for Roger Fiennes*, a Nicholas Hereward deposed that his daughter Philippa had been baptized at Herstmonceux in east Sussex, in Nov. 1384. This Nicholas is more likely to have come from the family residing at Hailsham, a few miles from Herstmonceux, rather than that of Arundel: Suss. Arch. Colls. xii. 42; Suss. Feet of Fines (Suss. Rec. Soc. xxiii), no. 2340.
