Biography

Llewellyn may have been the son of a namesake living at Pucklechurch in 1536, where he himself was lessee of the parsonage at death. By trade a chandler he can thus be distinguished from the clothman of that name living at Farleigh Hungerford, Somerset, who during Michaelmas term 1549 was sued with others in the common pleas for money owed. Admitted to the freedom of Wells on 15 Apr. 1550, he was elected to the Twenty-Four on 19 June following; his progress thereafter took the normal course for a leading citizen. His Membership followed a year after his first term as master, and seems not to have been without incident. He is almost certainly identifiable with the ‘Mr. Fludkyn’ listed among the opponents of a government bill in the Parliament of 1555. Fludkyn being a feasible anglicization of a name which often appears in the Wells records as Fflewellyan. By a will made on 3 Sept. 1568 he provided for his wife, son and kin: the will was proved on the following 20 Oct.4
