Biography

Thornborough was related to a namesake who was dean of York 1589-93, and subsequently bishop of Limerick, Bristol and Worcester. Doubtless it was this connexion that secured him the seat at Ripon in 1601. No trace has been found of any activities by Thornborough in that Parliament. He had bought the Hampshire manor of Leckford Riches in 1590, and conveyed it to his brother-in-law Thomas Mompesson five years later. His appointment as constable of Scarborough castle was for life, and in 1606 he petitioned Salisbury for the arrears of his wages and for the repayment of £6,000 advanced by him for the levying of troops in Ireland. The arrears of his wages, at least, were paid promptly. In 1608 Thornborough’s daughter married into the Gates family of Seamer, Yorkshire. He died 15 Oct. 1630, aged 63.2
