Returned unopposed as an opposition Whig in 1741, standing jointly with Sir Miles Stapylton, a Tory,1 Morpeth died 9 Aug. 1741 before Parliament met, of a ‘venereal distemper which he caught in Italy and kept secret so long that it proved at last incurable’.2
